Perhaps skill cap wouldn't be the correct term here, but I'd say pet builds have the highest "knowledge cap". You also need to be rather active to get the most out of pet builds, and there is a rather large difference in overall performance from a pet build which just sits passively and a pet build which is constantly buffing/debuffing and such. Which means you generally need to augment pet builds with additional pets from items to really keep up with damage. Also, quantity > quality with pets, usually. You often benefit more from placing points into things which seemingly aren't pet-oriented, like flat damage skills and resist reduction skills. It can be harder to play safe compared to standard damage builds. Pets don't really tank for you realistically, and you also need to watch their stats along with your own. Where as in other games, pet builds tend to be the "newb builds" with the most simplistic and safe gameplay, in GD it is a lot different.
Pet builds are kind of opposite in this game compared to other similar games. Then you can respec later into pet Cabalist, in case you ever find the required items. I'd rather recommend leveling with the Vitality Cabalist which is very tanky and can do all the campaign content selffound with only faction gear. Max level with sets and legendaries are probably a different story, but chances are that you will give up long before that. Many monsters and bosses permanently ignore your pets and go directly for you, and because you don't have noticeable damage / life steal or defenses with an effective pet build, it is absolutely not fun to play once you get into Act 4 and onwards. So you are severely gimped in your gear and skill choices, since you can't have both.
And all the gear you pick up while leveling only has either pet- or player damage. However there is one big problem with all pet builds - the pets themselves only scale with the explicit pet boni on gear. Pet builds, at least as Necromancer, are initially much faster than *most* other non-pet builds.
I know current pet builds are very viable for endgame from various websites I researched.īut starting out with pets seems to be very slow going compared to actual DPS builds so I wanted to ask at what point pets become competetive to other builds in regards to performance and survivability?
